SAINTS: Get wish Foe ousts Sandusky By DAREN TOMHAVE Times Herald MARLETTE Maria Gerstenberger knows what the Sandusky basketball team returns next season. It still doesn't make losing this season any easier. The Redskins' season was derailed by a familiar foe and in familiar fashion Monday. Behind aggressive man-to-man defense, Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary handed Sandusky a 49-38 loss in a Class regional semifinals at Marlette. Seminary (22-2) advances to Wednesday's 7 p.m.
regional final against Harbor Beach (19-5), a 52-33 winner over Royal Oak Shrine. The Cardinals are seeking their third straight berth in the state quarterfinals. They also ousted the Redskins in last year's regional final, 39-28. Gerstenberger, a junior guard, returns next year to a 22-2 team that loses just three seniors. Maria "Oh, I'm sad and excited at all Gerstenberger the same time," she said.
"I'm excited about next year because I think we're going to be really good. We had a great season, though, and we're proud of that." It ended, thanks to Seminary's opportunistic defense, timely snooting and the spunky play of 5-foot-3 point guard Alisha Daniels. The Redskins shot 55 (17-31) from the floor, but committed 18 turnovers. "It was the same thing last year," Sandusky Coach Al DeMott said. "I thought we were ready for it, but they're just so aggressive and so quick." Daniels, meanwhile, drove fearlessly down the lane for a game-high 17 points, including 10-14 from the free-throw line.
Seminary enjoyed an overwhelming advantage at the stripe, going 15-23 to Sandusky's 3-6. Most importantly, though, the Cardinals were able to stem potential rallies from the Redskins with timely second-half buckets. The Redskins cut a 27-18 deficit to five on Gerstenberger's jumper with 352 left in the third, only to see the Cardinals' Melissa Gorseg-ner respond with five straight points. Trailing 35-24, Sandusky opened the fourth with a 6-2 spurt, capped by Melissa Chambers' baseline drive with 6:33 left. But Seminary answered again with five points, including back-to-back buckets from Katie Elder, to push the lead to 42-30.
Continued from PageIC while grabbing 15. Meanwhile, the Saints were 8-18 from the floor, igniting a huge early advantage on the heels of a lackluster start in last week's district final against Marysville. "We were gonna try to really start out hard," said 6-foot-3 senior center Rachel Bryer, who sparked the defense with eight blocks. "And we came out there really fast." Said Carter, who added five points: "That gives you confidence when you come out and play well from the get-go." As if the Saints needed any more confidence. Walkaway winners since day one of the season, St.
Clair still hasn't beaten a team by fewer than 19 points, and defense might be the reason why. The Saints had a bevy of steals including five in the first half and limited Williamston to 11-50 (22) shooting. And by a margin of 39-25, St Clair outrebound-ed the Hornets, who didn't boast a player with more than six points. "Our offense was a little shaky," said Bryer, who had seven rebounds. "But we had great defense." St.
Clair's offense did sputter slightly after the first quarter. The Saints shot 14-45 (31) in the final three quarters, including 5-18 in Star Landrtfi, CarsonvilkhPort Sanilac: Brandon Mustek. Goalie Kristina Walker had 18 saves in net for the Rebels, who fired 25 shots on net Boost Edmonton Oilers' Adam Oates. Oates, an NHL veteran, is considered a top playmaker.
"I (control) the puck really well," Fogal said. "If I see someone open, I'm going to get them the puck." Of course, Fogal is expected to get his share of looks, too. Pionk expects him to vie for the team's lead in goals, and for now is even with defenseman David Wingard. His ability to score is partly attributed to his speed which wins him many battles to the loose puck but it also goes back to his on-ice awareness, his coach said. "He also knows how to get into position to receive the puck," Pionk said.
"At this level, that's something we have to drive into the kids. And he's very active without the puck." Port Huron High, a member of the Macomb Area Conference, finished 7-17-1 a season ago. Pionk thinks the Big Reds can win at least 13 or 14 this season, thanks again, in part, to Fogal, an honors student in the classroom. "He's not (an official) captain," said Pionk, who never had seen Fogal play until practices began last month. "But he's certainly a leader with the amount of effort he puts forth." That's paying off for the Big Reds, who return to action Wednesday at St.

Sandusky held Seminary's leading scorer, guard Andrea Taylor, to six points, but the 6-1 Elder followed Daniels with 12 points. Elder was matched up against 6-0 forward Stacie Maier, who led the Redskins with 13 points on 6-8 shooting before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. "Stacie's a good ballplayer," Seminary Coach Terry Vasold said. "She's got a nice shot down on the baseline, she's quick Katie hasn't seen anyone with that much size and ability.
"She was a little bit intimidated by her, but finally we told her, 'Hey you've got to catch the ball and put it She made a couple nice baskets in there that I thought was the real turning point of the game." "In the third and fourth quarters, we really focused on getting our shots in transition and getting them to play a half-court game," Brighton Coach Jason Piepho said.
